EIA Report: No Coal-Fired Sources Added in First Half of 2014

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that new generation capacity added during the first half of 2014 came only from natural gas and renewable sources, such as wind and solar facilities.  No coal-fired sources were added during this time frame.  Coops can expect more natural gas capacity and a risk of increased price volatility.  Click here to read more.

Some State Regulators Say EPA Clean Power Plan Unworkable

Regulators from Texas, Indiana, Montana and Arizona told the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee’s energy and power subcommittee that the reduction targets in the U.S.  Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed Clean Power Plan are “too much, too soon.”  To read more, click here (subscription required).

Coop Solar Facility Completed June 30

A solar facility consisting of 1,880 solar panels was completed this summer as a result of the joint efforts of Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services, People’s Energy Cooperative and Tri-County Electric Cooperative.  The facility is expected to produce about 682,000 kWh a year. Georgia Coop Enters Solar Deal

Iowa Coop Begins Operation of Largest Solar Farm in State

Farmers Electric Cooperative’s new 2,900 panel solar farm has commenced operations.  The solar farm is the state’s largest, generating up to 1.1 million kWh a year.  State and federal tax credits and investor-owned utility incentives have sparked interest in solar development in the state.  Click here for more information.

Vermont Coop Proposes Change to Net Metering Program

As the Sutherland Coop Team reported on April 2, 2014, legislation in Vermont this spring opened the door for more homeowners to sell excess power back to the electrical grid. Jackson Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) has entered into a 25-year agreement to purchase power from a ground-mounted solar project developed by Green Power EMC.
