Kentucky Electric Cooperative Expands Natural Gas Plants
East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC) is planning significant expansion of its natural gas-fired power plants, including two new plants and the conversion of two existing coal-fired plants to “co-fire” natural gas, aiming to comply with Biden administration rules on greenhouse gas emissions. The two new plants, costing around $1.8 billion in total, are expected to be operational by 2028 and 2030, respectively. EKPC is also doubling its investment in demand-side management programs to reduce electricity usage and peak power demand by 2030 and is maintaining flexibility with its coal-fired plants while continuing to invest in natural gas and solar power.
